Is Christmas What You Think It Is?
A Few Christmas Truths
Let’s begin with a new Christmas carol for your viewing and listening pleasure:
“You neatly set aside the command of God to maintain your own tradition. For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’ But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever you would have received from me is Corban’ (that is, a gift devoted to God), he is no longer permitted to do anything for his father or mother. Thus you nullify the word of God by the tradition you have handed down. And you do so in many such matters.” —Jesus Christ (Mark 7:9-13)
Christmas is one of those “many such matters” where we “nullify the word of God.” Consider Deuteronomy 12:2-4:
Destroy completely all the places where the nations you are dispossessing have served their gods—atop the high mountains, on the hills, and under every green tree. Tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, burn up their Asherah poles, cut down the idols of their gods, and wipe out their names from every place. You shall not worship the LORD your God in this way.
This tradition of Christmas has people setting up a green tree in their living room claiming that this is all about Jesus. This tree is a modern day “sacred pillar,” or “Asherah pole.” The LORD says that you shall not worship Him in this way. Jeremiah 10:2-5 sounds an awful lot like a Christmas tree:
This is what the LORD says: “Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by the signs in the heavens, though the nations themselves are terrified by them. For the customs of the peoples are worthless; they cut down a tree from the forest; it is shaped with a chisel by the hands of a craftsman. They adorn it with silver and gold and fasten it with hammer and nails, so that it will not totter.
Like scarecrows in a cucumber patch, their idols cannot speak. They must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them, for they can do no harm, and neither can they do any good.”
This applies to man-made idols. Even though the Christmas tree does not have to be “shaped with a chisel,” that does not mean that it hasn’t become a modern-day idol, our version of an Asherah pole. In these verses we are commanded against doing this.
Further down in Deuteronomy 12, in verses 29-30, He expounds on this:
When the LORD your God cuts off before you the nations you are entering to dispossess, and you drive them out and live in their land, be careful not to be ensnared by their ways after they have been destroyed before you. Do not inquire about their gods, asking, “How do these nations serve their gods? I will do likewise.”
Most of the modern-day celebration of Christmas is not in the Bible. Below is a documentary that details the origin of many of the traditions that we have inherited. You will be blessed if you budget some time and view the entire video.
I wrote a post last year detailing the true story of the birth of the Messiah and contrasted that with our modern traditions: Have you considered this: Christmas? Please click the link and go explore a true Biblical perspective of the story in its true Israelite/Jewish context.
In Jeremiah 16:19-21, Jeremiah is having a conversation with the LORD Yehovah:
O
LORDYehovah, my strength and my fortress, my refuge in the day of distress, the nations will come to You from the ends of the earth, and they will say, “Our fathers inherited nothing but lies, worthless idols of no benefit at all. Can man make gods for himself? Such are not gods!”“Therefore behold, I will inform them, and this time I will make them know My power and My might; then they will know that My name is
the LORDYehovah.
It was foretold that we would inherit lies. That has happened. The good part is that Yehovah said that He would “inform” us of the truth. You have been informed. What will you do with that?
Once you realize that Christmas is not what it is purported to be, you should begin to question and test everything else that you believe. I address more of those in my book Blessings & Curses: if my people…
This book reveals who we are, where we are, and what we can expect in the near future. Those are big claims. Get your copy today at Amazon and test those claims!
